Is a home battery worth it in Queensland?

The short answer

Whether a battery is worth it depends on your bill, when you use power and the size of system you need. Two things have changed in 2026 that matter: the federal discount takes roughly 25 to 30% off, and South East Queensland's midday Solar Sharer window lets a battery charge at no energy charge on an eligible plan.

What does a battery cost in Queensland?

Installed prices after the federal discount:

Installed home battery prices in Australia, after the federal discount
Battery sizeTypical installed price
8 to 13 kWh$8,550 to $10,925
14 to 22 kWh$10,700 to $13,650
23 to 31 kWh$13,650 to $17,450
32 to 40 kWh$16,650 to $21,250
41 to 49 kWh$19,600 to $25,050

Is there a Queensland battery rebate?

No. The Queensland Battery Booster closed to new applications in May 2024 and has not been replaced. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is the only support available in Queensland, and it is already included in the prices above.

What has changed in 2026?

Two things. The federal discount moved to a tiered structure on 1 May 2026, with the full rate on the first 14 kWh. And from 1 July 2026, South East Queensland is covered by the Solar Sharer Offer: eligible plans give at least three hours of electricity a day at no energy charge, from 11am to 2pm, with or without solar panels.

What decides whether it is worth it for you?

We do not publish payback figures, because they depend on too many things about your home. These are the questions that decide it:

  • How big is your bill, and how much of your usage is in the evening and overnight?
  • Do you already have solar, and how much of it goes back to the grid?
  • Are you on, or could you move to, a plan with the Solar Sharer midday window?
  • What size battery does your usage actually need? Too small wastes the one-time discount, too big wastes money.

How do I find out for my home?

Tell Ray your bill and what you are after. He sizes the system from your actual usage and explains which rebates apply before anyone quotes you. Where a verified installer covers your postcode, he can then introduce one verified local installer to run the full numbers.

Common questions

Does Queensland have a solar battery rebate in 2026?

No. The Battery Booster closed in May 2024 and has not been replaced. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is the only support available.

Do I need solar panels to benefit from a battery in Queensland?

You do not need panels to use the Solar Sharer window, but whether a battery pays off for you depends on your plan and usage. Retailers can recover the cost through higher rates outside the window, so compare the whole plan.

How long does a battery take to pay for itself in Queensland?

It depends on your bill, your usage pattern and your plan, so we do not publish a payback figure. A verified local installer can run the numbers for your home.
