Is a home battery worth it in NSW?
The short answer
Whether a battery is worth it in NSW depends on your bill, when you use power and the size of system you need. In 2026 the federal discount takes roughly 25 to 30% off, and NSW adds two programs of its own: eligible households can borrow up to $15,000 at 0% interest, and connecting the battery to a virtual power plant can add an incentive of about $720 to $1,500.

What does a battery cost in NSW?
Installed prices after the federal discount, before any NSW incentive:
| Battery size | Typical installed price |
|---|---|
| 8 to 13 kWh | $8,550 to $10,925 |
| 14 to 22 kWh | $10,700 to $13,650 |
| 23 to 31 kWh | $13,650 to $17,450 |
| 32 to 40 kWh | $16,650 to $21,250 |
| 41 to 49 kWh | $19,600 to $25,050 |
What NSW battery support is there?
Two NSW programs sit alongside the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount:
- The Home Energy Saver Program: a 0% interest loan of $2,000 to $15,000, repaid over up to 10 years, for solar, batteries and other home electrification upgrades. Combined household taxable income must be $210,000 or less.
- The Peak Demand Reduction Scheme incentive: about $720 to $1,500 for connecting an eligible battery to a virtual power plant. It applies to batteries only and stacks with the federal discount.
What is a virtual power plant?
A virtual power plant is a program run by an energy retailer or provider that can draw on your battery at times of high demand, in return for credits or better rates. Joining one is what makes the battery eligible for the NSW incentive. Read the terms before you join: some limit how much of your battery is left for you.
How does the Solar Sharer window change things?
From 1 July 2026, eligible NSW plans give at least three hours of electricity a day at no energy charge, from 11am to 2pm, with or without solar panels. A battery can fill up in that window and run the house in the evening. Retailers can recover the cost through higher rates at other times, so compare the whole plan, not just the midday hours.
What decides whether it is worth it for you?
We do not publish payback figures, because they depend on too many things about your home. These are the questions that decide it:
- How big is your bill, and how much of your usage is in the evening and overnight?
- Do you already have solar, and how much of it goes back to the grid?
- Are you on, or could you move to, a plan with the Solar Sharer midday window?
- Would you join a virtual power plant, and are its terms right for you?
- What size battery does your usage actually need? Too small wastes the one-time federal discount, too big wastes money.

Common questions
Does NSW have a battery rebate in 2026?
NSW offers an incentive of about $720 to $1,500 for connecting an eligible battery to a virtual power plant, and a 0% interest loan of up to $15,000 for eligible households. Both sit alongside the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount.
Who can get the NSW 0% solar and battery loan?
The Home Energy Saver Program loan is for households with a combined taxable income of $210,000 or less. It ranges from $2,000 to $15,000 and is repaid over up to 10 years.
Do I have to join a virtual power plant?
No. The battery and the federal discount do not require it. Joining one is only needed for the NSW virtual power plant incentive.
How long does a battery take to pay for itself in NSW?
It depends on your bill, your usage pattern and your plan, so we do not publish a payback figure. A verified local installer can run the numbers for your home.
